What is reality? Does it have any characteristics that could define it? What it means when we assume anything to be real?
Lately, I have been pondering over these questions. Three people whose thoughts have become my companions in this chain of thoughts are Steven Spielberg, Akira Kurosawa and… no prize to guess… Albert Einstein. Screenplays of a few of movies from Spielberg and Kurosawa kicked off this chaotic turbulence in my space of thoughts and Einstein’s theory of relativity helped in deciphering the mystery a bit.
We all know and would agree on one thing that truth is a relative thing. But what about reality? Is reality also relative? When I thought of this question in the light of general theory of relativity I found some sort of understanding but not a complete answer. So, the question still holding its ground.
Though truth and reality essentially appears to be one and the same thing but they are different. Truth is relative and reality is supposed to be absolute. But is it really so?! If we remove all the relativity associated with a “reality” —then would the reality cease to exist? Truth may be an absolute thing but it can not exist without being related with something. And therefore it loses its absolute character.
The above is certainly true with respect of our universe. These concepts may not apply outwith the universe as we know it. For all practical purposes our universe is infinite. Let’s suppose I am the only thing present in the universe —and there is nothing else. No stars, no planets, no life, no atoms of any kind… nothing at all. In such a scenario would it be a valid statement if I say “I, Lalit Kumar, exist”?
No, it shall not be a valid statement. I am nothing if everything else is removed from the universe. My existence depends on the existence of everything else around us in the universe and I am defined by the relative presence of other things.
Think about it.
In the scenario that I mentioned above —my existence is a reality —but it is not a truth. This much I have understood —however the original question is still waiting for an answer. Can reality be defined?
Yours truly, in puzzlement!
