Photography has since long been a very important part of journalism. What a thousand words can not describe, one photograph will say that easily. Although, today we see a camera in everyone’s pocket —but photography as a profession requires skills and courage (e.g. in case of war photography). Such skills and courage in the field of photo-journalism is honored by Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography and Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography. These prizes are given to individuals who click great photos for the purpose of journalism. At present, each winner gets a prize of US$ 10,000 for their work.
Pulitzer Prize was established in 1917. American newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer had made provisions in his will to institute “four awards in journalism, four in letters and drama, one in education, and four traveling scholarships.” Pulitzer gave his money to the Columbia University for administering the prizes. Today, these prizes are given in 21 categories, including two in photo-journalism (Feature Photography and Breaking News Photography).
Pulitzer Prize for Photography was first given in 1942 and 26 prizes were distributed over 26 years until 1968. In the year 1968 the prize was abolished and instead two new prizes, namely, Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography and Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography were instituted. Then in the year 2000, the spot news prize was renamed to Breaking News Photography.
Many of the photos taken by Pulitzer winners have become famous since the beginning of these prizes. For example, Stanley Forman of Bostan Herald won a prize for photos of Fire at Marlborough Street, Joe Rosenthal won it for Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima and Kevin Carter won it for heart-wrenching Starving Sudanese Girl and Vulture. All these photographs, and many more, became world famous and will always remain memorable.
Pulitzer Prize is one of the most coveted prize in the field of news photography. Every photo-journalist dream of receiving this award. Many consider it as the Noble Prize of News Photography.
