It was unfortunate and a very wrong action taken by the government. The Central and Delhi government acted in an autocratic manner when Baba Ramdev was removed from the Ramleela Maidan in the middle of the night. The Delhi Police says that Baba had taken permission only to organize a yoga training camp. This claim may be true –Delhi Police might have been unaware but the fact was known to the entire world that Baba Ramadev was NOT going to hold merely a yoga camp in Ramlila Maidan. If Delhi Police was so concerned about law and order situation –they should not have allowed Baba to enter Delhi region in the first place.
Everyone knew why Baba Ramdev and his supporters were gathering in Delhi. This morning I was shocked when I got the news of police assault on the demonstrators. Whether you are for Baba Ramdev or against him –the freedom of expression must be ensured in our free country. First allowing thousands of people to gather in a single place and then charge them with batons is not how an administration should tackle protests.
What happened last night was quite akin to the emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1975-77.
The statements that emerged after this attack were also equally as stupid as the action. Both the government and Baba Ramdev said things that clearly sounded false or exaggerated. Kapil Sibal’s statement that Baba had signed a letter to call off the agitation and that the Delhi Police had given permission only for a yoga camp were reckless.
Equally reckless were the statements made by Baba when he was bundled up and sent to his ashram in Haridwar. Baba used rhetorics like “hazaaron laashe bichh jaati” (thousands would have been killed), “Jallianwala Bagh jaisa kaand ho gaya hota” (massacre like Jallianwala Bagh could have taken place), “Government mera encounter karwana chaahti hai” (the government wants to get me killed in an encounter)… all these are way too much exaggerated statements just to gather public sympathy.
India has seen much worse things than last night’s incident. But imagining that the police would have killed thousands of people right in the heart of country’s capital is utterly ridiculous. Baba Ramdev is speaking in a tone that better suits a budding politician. I have no trouble with Baba Ramdev coming into politics –but he should do so openly. As one of readers said in his comments on previous article, Baba should not use the public support which he has gathered in the name of yoga. Say openly that I am getting into politics and I am going to uproot the menace of corruption. As a yoga guru; he is right in using people’s pressure to force the government to cede to his demands. But it will sound awkward if tomorrow he asks the same people to vote for him!
The government has made a monumental mistake by taking police action against Baba Ramdev and his supporters. Whatever was government’s plan –I feel that it has backfired.
